Festivals and Events at The Markland

Summer 2019 - Welcome to another Beautiful Year.

We are busy lining up a fun filled musical season with many talented musicians. We are so proud of the local talent here in Cape Breton and are fortunate to have a lovely music facility in which to host the likes of the Barra MacNeils, the Celtic Rant, Peter Katz, the Red Dirt Skinners, and many others.

Deron Donovan will be joining us in the main lodge every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm. He adds lots of joviality to the evening and is sure to entertain. On Thursdays, Norm MacDonald will be here to entertain with his lively music and, on Fridays and Saturdays, we welcome Shawn Mackinnon. Finally, on Sundays, we'll have the pleasure of listening to Michael Gorey, a local award winning Celtic/Folk musician. We are fortunate to have all this wonderful talent on a nightly basis.

Make sure you visit our Cafe during the day. The Cafe is open from 11:30 to 4:30pm and will be serving Adrienne's famous home made cinnamon rolls, biscotti and brownies along with top notch espressos, lattes and hot chocolates. Perfect for after a bike ride, swim, or hike, or ... just to accompany a good book and a great ocean view.

For those who have always dreamed of cycling the renowned Cabot Trail, the Markland (in association with the company Live Out Loud Adventures) will be offering a trip from Thurday August 8th to Thursday August 15th. The Markland will serve as the starting and end point for this exhilarating 300km bike ride, considered one of the most scenic bicycle rides in all of Canada.  For more information, you can email info@liveoutloudadventures.com

May 15- July 5, 2019

Our first exhibit this year is showcasing the works of two local Cape Breton artists, Celeste Friesen and Claudia Gahlinger.
Celeste is a local favourite whose art has graced the Markland walls for many years. This year she presents a new series of acrylic canvases expressing the sea, sky and beach through minimal colours, simplified shapes, and brush strokes. She truly captures the spirit, energy and landscape of Cape Breton in an unique and magical way.

Her work will be celebrated with the intricate & delightful hooked rugs made by Claudia Gahlinger. Masterful ... these little gems reflect the heart and soul of the region.

Feel free to drop in at the Markland anytime to view and enjoy their work.

SUSAN HOCKADAY JONES - The Gyre Series Photographs
July 7 - August 11, 2019
Artists' Reception: Sunday July 14th, 1-4pm
"Turning and turning in the widening gyre."
Global Climate Change is a daunting challenge for all of us, and very difficult to approach as an artist. Susan seeks to bring the global and personal aspects of Climate Change together in this unique series of photographs taken while living in Cape Breton in the summer of 2017. Her artwork has always been about the complexities and patterns of nature but now in an attempt to heighten our awareness of Climate Change, she presents a collection of pictures, of portraits of us at this time:  the collision of nature with the accumulation of trash. She presents a complex reality with two realms in conflict struggling for control of our environment.  A thought provoking and sensitive presentation by an artist who has found great inspiration, deep friendships, and 50 years of joy on Cape Breton Island. Welcome Back Susan!

We welcome you all to Susan's reception on August 4th where her photographs and her inspirations will be celebrated.

SARAH BURWASH - Blurred at Waist High River
August 18 - September 9, 2019

It is with great joy that we welcome Sarah Burwash and her watercolours to the Markland. Sarah's work most often takes form in narrative, watercolour paintings. She depicts figures experiencing the spectrum of life: creation, destruction, rest, play, curiosity, sorrow, exhilaration, and death. Her exploratory works bring a refreshing artistic approach to the natural landscapes that surround us.
PUB NIGHTS - 7:30 to 10:30pm
$15 at the door

Neil McDaniel
July 12th
The Markland is looking forward to welcoming Neil McDaniel, an exceptionally talented musician from Margaree who performs Celtic/Folk music playing on as many as 8 different instruments. Known throughout the Island, it will be a treat to see and hear Neil on July 12th. Welcome!

Glen Roache
July 19th

A local favourite, Glen hails from Cheticamp where he has been performing for the past 30 years, many of which were with his former band, Glen Roache and The Mustangs.  A great entertainer, his performances promise to bring an evening of great fun.

Rachel Davis and Buddy MacDonald
September 14th
With a hard driving fiddle style and an infectiously joyful stage presence, Cape Breton fiddler Rachel Davis has quickly moved to the forefront of the traditional music scene in Atlantic Canada. Born and raised in Baddeck, Cape Breton, Rachel feels as comfortable on a festival or concert stage as she does in a dance hall back home. Having earned a reputation as one of the best Cape Breton fiddlers, we are so fortunate to have Rachel performing for us at the Markland.

Rachel will be joined by the popular and well known singer, song-writer and entertainer Buddy MacDonald. Buddy was born and raised on the Northern Shores of Cape Breton Island. His songs, along with his recordings, have been performed and recorded by artists throughout the country.

An evening of pure entertainment. Please join us for the fun.
Tuesday August 13th,

They're coming back! This is an annual Celtic special you won't want to miss.

The Markland is thrilled to be welcoming back for the 8th year the well known Canadian musical group, the Barra MacNeil family.  We love having the Barra MacNeils. Their highly entertaining and energetic yet intimate show sells out every year. It truly is a Maritime highlight!  So come on out ... the evening is sure to entertain.

The six MacNeil siblings are widely regarded as one of the greatest live concert acts in the Celtic world. Hailing from Sydney Mines, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, the family group is deeply rooted in Celtic music, culture, dance, language and history. Their numerous critically acclaimed recordings have included their own original songs as well as tried and true standards, both instrumental and vocal. Very exciting indeed for all of us up here on the northern tip of Cape Breton!

Please call the Markland at (902)383-2246 to get your tickets ($30/person). Advance Ticket Sales only.
